Fake Camel-Toe Underwear: Why?

The “camel toe” look is one that divides many. In one camp, there are folks who would rather not put their lower lady lips on display. For others, it’s a fashion statement worth making. For Khloé Kardashian, it’s a fact of life.

Now photos are circulating around the Internet of brands selling underwear with built-in molds to make it look as if the wearer has camel toe. You can find an assortment on AliExpress.com, which advertises these contraptions for a variety of uses. It suggests them for drag queens — one particular item is labeled “crossdress” with a bright orange banner. The same item is also described as “transgender underwear.” (It should be noted that trans women and drag queens are two distinctly different kinds of people.)

Oh, and these contraptions ain’t cheap, either. Prices on AliExpress range from $72.18 to $108.96, which sounds like a lot, at least to this writer, for an artificial . A few of the underwear inserts come in a range of flesh colors, so at least people of many races and ethnicities can enjoy one in their own skin tone. Many of them are crafted from silicone.

I can see how these pieces might be a hilarious addition to a fabulous (or intentionally not-so-fabulous) drag ensemble. But as a woman, I shudder at the thought of having one of these puppies tucked away in my shorts while walking through the New York City streets. It’s a recipe for heinous catcalls. It’s even difficult to avoid street harassment when you’re in a parka and boots — can’t imagine that a visible camel toe would make a walk through the city an uneventful experience.

Still, for those women who don’t mind the extra attention they’re bound to get in something like this, the decision is theirs to wear it. But for this writer? To borrow a phrase from Randy Jackson, “It’s gonna be a no from me, dawg.”
