Gucci to Show at Paris Week Next Season

Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, has conceived a three-part homage to Paris, which will culminate in moving their S/S 2019 show to Paris Week on September 24th.

Michele’s tribute to Paris began earlier this year, when Gucci debuted a pre-fall advertising campaign inspired by the Parisian student protests of Mai ’68, featuring Nouvelle Vague imagery and an accompanying hashtag #GucciDansLesRues, or, Gucci in the streets. In addition, the brand will also be staging their Resort 2019 collection in Arles, France this upcoming May 30th.

“When Alessandro told me of his desire to present the new collection in Paris— continuing the French-inspired narrative — I thought it was a perfect way to continue the creative homage to France,” president and CEO of Gucci, Marco Bizzarri, said in a statement. “Gucci is a global brand with deep and vibrant Italian roots and a visionary French shareholder, Kering.”

The news comes at a time when many labels have decamped away from their home turf to seek out a bigger – and more lucrative – audience in France. Thom Browne, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, and Altuzarra have all defected from New York Fashion Week in recent years in favour of starry-eyed Paris. In addition to Prada, Fendi and Versace, Gucci has always presented one of the most anticipated shows of Milan Fashion Week, especially since Michele’s millennial-friendly revitalization of the brand. There’s no question that the loss of Gucci will be a huge blow to the Milan Fashion Week calendar – the brand will be staging an as-of-yet under wraps event at the Gucci Hub on September 19th to make up for their absence.

Luckily for Milan, the move is only temporary. “We will then look forward to returning to Milan in February 2019,” Bizzarri states.
