Steve Scalise, the Majority Whip for the US House of Representatives, has been shot along with a number of aides at baseball practice in Virginia, according to media reports.

Local police have confirmed they’re investigating a shooting involving multiple people.

Fox reporter Chad Pergram says a gunman armed with a rifle attacked the group near a YMCA in the city of Alexandria, firing dozens of shots.

Scalise is the current US House of Representatives Majority Whip and representative for Louisiana's 1st congressional district.

Speaking on CNN Representative Mo Brooks of Alabama said Scalise was shot with a semi automatic weapon on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia. Brooks said he saw a man with a gun “blasting away”.

White House Press secretary Sean Spicer said on Twitter that both US President Donald  Trump and the Vice President Mike Pence are aware of the “developing situation”.
