The classic smoky eye is a beauty classic, but at Milan Week autumn/winter 2017 it was firmly turned on its head. Forget the subtle shading of silver, black and pearl shades to create a pretty, tonal eye look – instead this season saw make-up artists creating bold, graphic looks for the catwalk.

At Prada, Versace and Marni, Pat McGrath created bold black eye looks using a mystery new product from her eponymous make-up line. The Prada look saw opaque black smudged around the eyes, lifted with a flash of cornflower blue above the lids. Versace was a graphic swoop of black running from the inside of the nose right out to the temples. And Marni, the most inventive of them all, saw McGrath and her team creating different graphic eyeliner looks for each model in sooty black. All three looks were bold, striking and utterly modern, set against fresh skin and bare lips.

At Alberta Ferretti the inky smoky eyes were given a surprising twist, with Tom Pecheux applying gold at the inner corners of the eyes and MAC’s Paint Stick in Basic Red at the centre, whilst smudgy lids were the look at Giorgio Armani by Linda Cantello.

The message is clear – black certainly isn’t going out of fashion, but it seems next season will see us applying it very differently.
