Emma: The Hardest Thing About La La Land

EMMA STONE will attend tonight’s Academy Awards with the best chance she’s ever had of going home with the statue (although she did receive a Lego version after she missed out on the prize in 2015) for her role in La La Land – but making the song-and-dance love story wasn’t all as carefree as it looked. Echoing the filming of the dance number that accompanied Good Morning in Singin' In The Rain, Stone and co-star Ryan Gosling filmed the movie's key dance scene in one take, which they only had a few attempts at in order to capture the perfect dusk light.

“The hardest scene to shoot, and my favourite scene, was the duet number on the hill,” she nodded. “We’d rehearsed it for about four months by the time that we shot it, and we had to do it in one take. It was like six minutes, so we walked up the hill and did the whole thing, and then did it again. But that’s what made it so fun. It was very exciting to finally achieve that after all those months.”

Although what she might wear to the Oscars is still firmly under wraps, she did reveal that her favourite piece from her character’s beautiful colour-block wardrobe was in one of her own favourite red-carpet colours.

“I love the green dress, from the planetarium scene when she flies into space,” she smiled. “And the necklace.”
