In case you haven’t noticed, Katy Perry has been everywhere lately. Between co-chairing the 2017 Met Gala and appearing on countless talk shows and radio stations to promote her fifth studio album, Witness (and dish on her long-standing feud with Taylor Swift), it’s almost impossible to go a day without reading some Katy Perry news.
But in case that wasn’t enough of a Katy fix, the 32-year-old pop star decided to pull a Big Brother and hold a weekend-long livestream on YouTube to celebrate the release of Witness, which came out on June 9th. The 96-hour stream saw the “Swish Swish” songstress do everything from ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen> and even speaking to a .
Below, eight of the most memorable moments from Katy Perry’s Witness World Wide Livestream:
1. When she cooked with Gordon Ramsay.
Perry enlisted celeb chef Gordon Ramsay to teach her how to cook zucchini noodles, quinoa and meatballs. The most surprising part? Despite Katy’s “meltdown” (she ran out of the kitchen in frustration at one point), Ramsay actually stayed unusually quite calm throughout, and even praised the singer’s dish. “Bon Appétit,” indeed.
2. When she acknowledged her mistakes with cultural appropriation.
During an interview with Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson, Perry admitted to several mistakes of cultural appropriation, including wearing a braided hairstyle for her .
“I’ve made several mistakes,” she said during the interview, which appeared on Deray’s podcast Pod Save The People, adding it was one of her “empowered angels, Cleo” who explained to her the history behind black women’s hairstyles. “She told me about the power in black women’s hair and how beautiful it is and the struggle… I didn’t know and I won’t ever understand some of those things because of who I am… but I can educate myself and that’s what I’m trying to do along the way.”
Perry also touched on the time she dressed as a geisha during a performance for the 2013 American Music Awards, saying, “I didn’t know that I did it wrong until I heard people saying I did it wrong. And, sometimes that’s what it takes. It takes someone to say, out of compassion and out of love, ‘Hey, this is what the origin is.'”
3. When she revealed she was once suicidal.
In perhaps one of the most powerful moments of the livestream, Perry sat down with therapist Dr. Siri Singh, host of Viceland’s The Therapist, to show viewers what a therapy session looked like. During the 60-minute interview, Katy opened up about her struggles with being her authentic self while promoting her public image as she lives “under this crazy microscope.”
“I so badly want to be Katheryn Hudson [Perry’s birth name] that I don’t even want to look like Katy Perry anymore sometimes — and, like, that is a little bit of why I cut my hair, because I really want to be my authentic self,” she said.
She also revealed she used to have suicidal thoughts, which she referenced in her 2013 song, “By the Grace of God.”
“I’m ashamed because, of course, Katy Perry’s so strong,” she said through tears, referencing her onstage persona. “I feel ashamed that I would have those thoughts, that I’d feel that low and that depressed.”
4. When she ranked her ex-boyfriends’ sexual performances
James Corden stopped by for the livestream for a special version of his Late Late Night show segment, “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” — a cross between Truth or Dare and Fear Factor. Essentially, the game involves the duo asking each other difficult questions, which they can choose to answer or eat some questionable foods, including scorpions, pickled pigs feet and bird saliva, instead.
When Corden asked Perry to rank her ex-boyfriends, John Mayer, Diplo and Orlando Bloom, based on their sexual performances, Katy first responded with “NO!! I WILL NOT DO THAT!! They are all amazing lovers!” However, in the end, she opted to not eat the 100-year-old egg, ranking Mayer in first, Bloom in second and Diplo on third.
5. When she revealed Josh Groban was “The One That Got Away”
During the same segment, she told Corden her song “The One That Got Away” was inspired by her “good friend,” Josh Groban. Mind = blown.
6. When she forgave Taylor Swift…
During a chat with Arianna Huffington for a special episode of The Thrive Global Podcast, Perry announced she was ready to put the “Bad Blood” (sorry, we had to) and arch nemesis, Taylor Swift, behind her.
“I am ready to let it go. I forgive her and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her,” she told Huffington. “I think it’s actually like, I think it’s time. There are bigger fish to fry, and there are real problems in the world.”
She added, “I love her, and I want the best for her. And I think she’s a fantastic songwriter… Like maybe I don’t agree with everything she does and she doesn’t agree with everything I do, but I just really truly want to come together in a place of love and forgiveness and understanding and compassion.”
Perry then threw her hands in the air and broke out into song, singing Frozen‘s “Let It Go,” concluding, “There’s a lot of other things out there in the world that people need to be focused on, and I truly, like, God bless her on her journey. God bless her. Honestly.”
7. …and then changed the lyrics to her rumoured T.Swift diss track, “Swish Swish.”
For the livestream finale, Perry held a Witness fan concert in downtown Los Angeles. When it came time for her to sing her latest track, “Swish Swish,” which is rumoured to be about Swift (though Katy has adamantly denied this), there was a noticeable change to the lyrics. Instead of the usual line, “Don’t you come for me,” in the first verse, Perry sang, “God bless you on your journey, oh baby girl.”
Sounds very similar to what she said in that Thrive interview, no?
8. When her pants split during her performance.
Aaaand, in true livestream fashion a wardrobe malfunction had to happen. While performing during the finale concert, Perry’s pants ripped, though she played it off pretty well.
“That’s cool… I just learned I have a hole in my pants,” she told the audience. “It’s right near my hooha… but I’m wearing underwear, don’t you worry. So, I just want everyone who’s watching to brace themselves. And I probably shouldn’t have said anything but I just know the Internet sees everything so I just wanna.. I just, I can’t.”
She continued, “I was trying to be cool and I did that dance and now I realize I was not cool, especially when it comes out in pictures. Well, we’re all human, right? We all either got one or we don’t or we got both. I won’t let it take my power, how about that? Let’s do that. Just don’t look over here…”Photography via YouTube
