The Bump Reveal: Stealth Vs Show

WHEN Cheryl appeared this week in the latest L'Oréal ad clutching her now-unmistakably-pregnant tummy she carefully straddled the two recent camps of announcement protocol: namely stealth and show.

One group of stars – including models Behati Prinsloo, Candice Swanepoel and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley - choose to make the announcement themselves, in much the same way that people in the public eye always have.

Rather than use the old tried-and-tested statement from a representative route, however, they are taking matters in to their own hands with a perfectly timed, lovingly executed Instagram post. In recent weeks, Beyoncé has taken the medium to new levels, revealing her joy at expecting twins with a beautifully staged pregnancy shoot (complete with floral backdrop and underwater bump scenes).

The other camp is much more nonchalant about the situation. First stars including Keira Knightley and Anne Hathaway, and more recently Natalie Portman, Léa Seydoux and Clémence Poésy, have arrived on the red carpet bearing bumps we weren’t expecting them to have. Even Amal Clooney, who like Beyonce is expecting twins, merely went about her normal affairs until the world concluded that yes, in fact, she was indeed pregnant.

Eschewing the big reveal in favour of the more casual “Did I forget to mention I was growing a human?" approach seemed to be the way forward, a fresh, new anti-announcement in our hyper-sharing world, before Beyoncé turned the pregnancy reveal game on its head. No wonder Cheryl was torn as to what to do.

She could have followed in the footsteps of actresses Carey Mulligan and Eva Mendes; making no announcement at all before simply dropping their daughter’s name into conversation following the birth – avoiding annoying questions about the state of their health and the inevitable paparazzi storm accompanied by words like “glowing” and “ready to pop” (shudder).

Cheryl stepped out with boyfriend Liam Payne, showing what anyone in their right mind would assume to be a baby bump, but which still left the tabloids salivating about her “alleged” pregnancy. Finally, although she hasn’t choreographed a shoot or used the hashtag #blessed, she is touching her stomach, and that’s all the announcement we need. Phew.

Controlling your own announcements has its benefits – sharing information and pictures on your own terms with your own words unarguably allows a level of control in what is released. The downfall, however, of letting everyone inside your pregnancy “journey” is that the well-intentioned world feels as though they are along for the ride – and those nine months are surely long enough with just your friends and family offering their helpful advice never mind 20 million Instagram followers.Beyoncé Pregnant With Twins
