The Met Gala 2017 Debrief

FASHION Lovers swooned over the creations on display on the red carpet at last night's Met Gala, with many declaring it the most exciting in years. Thanks to the theme, which honoured avant-garde designer Rei Kawakubo of Commes des Garçons, stars chose adventurous attire that was at times sculptural and at others barely there at all.

A gaggle of perfectly honed bodies grabbed all the tabloid headlines: Kendall Jenner and two of her four sisters - Kim Kardashian West and - securing much of the chatter in dresses that were sleek and body-con.

While many of those in traditional red-carpet creations gave a nod to the night's theme with daring cut-outs, others chose more avant garde creations as a more direct homage to Kawakubo. Rihanna led the pack with an off-the-catwalk Commes look. She was joined by models Gigi Hadid, in Tommy Hilfiger, and Hailey Baldwin, in Carolina Herrera, who both wore nude tiered tulle; Helen Lasichanh, who attended with husband Pharrell Williams, wore a red cocoon dress with no arms; Clare Danes, in a oversized white frilled shirt; Solange Knowles, who wore a black puffa-style coat by Thom Browne; and event chair and performer Katy Perry, who chose an all-red ensemble including veil by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

Other moments of note were two red-carpet couple debuts - by and The Weeknd (whose ex-girlfriend, Bella Hadid, was also in attendance), and Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez. One of Lopez's ex-fiancés, Sean Puffy Combs, was also in attendance - and lay down on the stairs in boredom while his wife was photographed.

Despite the stellar turnout, there were a few notable absentees including Met Gala stalwart Sarah Jessica Parker, who reportedly missed the event for the first time since 2010 due to work commitments. Two other regular attendees - Amal Clooney and Beyonce - had equally good excuses: both are expecting twins later this spring. Madonna, however, did not disappoint - doing the exact opposite of blending in wearing floor-length camoflage.
