Swedish born Lisa Furuland is the founder of Sleepyhead of Sweden, one of the most requested products by new mothers. Furuland tells Mini Eyes On Events why she created the pods, where she finds her inspiration and what’s next for the baby brand currently taking the parenting world by storm.
How did the idea for the Sleepyhead come about?
When my first son, Ilias, was born in 2006, I searched unsuccessfully for an alternative to a blanket, a cot and a baby lounger. Something that essentially mimicked the womb. I wanted something more cozy that was also versatile and completely safe. We were (and sometimes still are!) a co-sleeping family. I wanted something that would enable us to comfortably and safely co-sleep with our children. That’s when Sleepyhead was born.Jools Oliver's Parenting Secrets

What advice would you give a new mother?
Like most mums, I am very busy, but I try to prioritise family time before work. I know that these days when they are so young won’t last forever. I think it’s important to take a long-view of our lives even when the days seem long and to try to stay in the moment and be present with the children as much as possible. That said, I am a big believer in self-care for mothers, and I believe getting enough sleep in the early days is so essential for both mother and baby to bond.
What three things would you recommend to a new mother?
A Sleepyhead, of course! A big family bed, as we are passionate bed-sharers, and a good nursing pillow.
Where do you get your ideas and inspiration from?
My head is a melting pot. I devour all things aesthetically pleasing in fashion, industrial design, photography, interior design, architecture, graphic design and nature. Our latest collection coming out this summer is inspired by nature. In Greece, it’s easy to take inspiration from the world around me. The typography and the flora have inspired our new collections.
Where’s the strangest/most unusual place you’ve seen the Sleepyhead photographed?
Recently, I saw one family use it on a decorated carriage as part of a wedding procession. Another favorite was seeing the pod in a hammock in Belize. The Sleepyhead was designed with travel in mind, so babies would always have a comfortable – and familiar - spot to rest. It can and has gone pretty much everywhere. I am especially proud when I see it being used in hospitals to make babies more comfortable. The Whittington Hospital in London uses 10 of the Sleepyhead pods to help soothe some of their sick and poorly babies. We also donate to several hospital maternity wards in Sweden who use with babies undergoing surgeries or just resting after delivery.
Your Instagram account has lots of amazing photos of your travels. Where do you like to travel to and why?
I am lucky that our favorite vacation spot, Greece, has become our new home. It was a natural step for us, after living ten years together north of Stockholm, as Costa is half Greek. I have to pinch myself when watching the sunrise and sunset from our verandah and remind myself that I actually live here.Meet The Instagram Mums To Follow Now

What’s the first thing you do when you get somewhere new?
When I travel, I always make sure the kids feel settled in first. We encourage them to take something they love from home. Then, for myself, my packing vices rest heavily (pun intended) on two pillars: clothes and photo equipment. The baggage allowance or the boot space is simply never enough. Wherever we go and whatever we do, you’ll find me lugging a mule-worthy load of cameras, lenses and paraphernalia. So sadly, not always being the most graceful self, I must admit.
What’s been your proudest Sleepyhead moment?
I knew we had made it big when our social media began growing so fast, with moms and celebrities recommending the product to one another. We have been ranked as a top-five baby registry item in the US, and in the UK, Sleepyhead has basically become a household name. Aside from the numerous awards for innovation, functionality and design - and Harrods asking us to launch a Sleepyhead pop-up shop - the proudest I ever am, is when people share their personal success stories about how the Sleepyhead literally has been a life-saver, for a mother, for a couple, for an entire family. We have been nicknamed the Baby Sleep Miracle.10 Parent Hacks

Are you fashion or beauty obsessive and why?
I love fashion! My wardrobe would allow me to change several times a day, but given I have my offices in our house, I do not necessarily have an excuse to show them all off. So clothes are definitely a guilty pleasure alongside camera equipment. And interior design and fresh flowers, and… But my beauty routine is pretty basic. I apply almost nothing. I usually just use Aesop’s A Rose by Any Other Name body wash and apply sun screen. But I couldn’t live without my Babor compact powder (Perfect Finish Foundation) and Clinique concealer. Throw in a good mascara and a pale red lipstick and I’m good to go. For the kids, we’re eclectic when it comes to labels; we cherry-pick. However, two of my favourites are Smallable and Scotch and Soda.
What’s next for Sleepyhead?
We just unveiled our latest invention, CloudTot, at the ABC Kids Expo as well as the CES show in Las Vegas. The CloudTot allows you to track baby’s movement and breathing with two revolutionary patent-pending features. The first is the Pep Pegs that gently nudges baby awake and alerts parents if no movement (meaning no breathing) is detected for 12 seconds. And the second is moisture detection via special conductive fabric and an app that tells you when baby has wet the bed. This smart accessory will also check on baby’s room temperature as well as play white noise tracks. We are over the moon to be releasing this product later in 2017 as there are no other motion sensors currently on the market with these special capabilities. I also love that you don’t have to wear or attach the sensor to the baby. CloudTot will turn the Sleepyhead into the first smart baby bed on the market in a complete all-in-one package you can easily transport.
