#SuzyNYFW: Ralph Lauren's Flower Power

One hundred thousand white orchids smothering walls and framing windows, unfolding a rich fragrance and fluttering with butterflies - the entrance to Ralph Lauren's show in his Madison Avenue store was a wonder of nature.

But the designer himself was quick to suggest that this orgy of gorgeousness was not just for us, the lucky few who were invited to sit on the velvet sofas and watch the show. Those clothes included soft tailored jackets from cream to beige with the occasional animal print, not least on the bold leopard-patterned bag.

There was a fashion element in textured macramé cardigans and a flower shape cut out at the midriff. But the look was mostly classic. And that is the story of see-now, buy-now - it has to be attractive enough to draw in clients, but not so wild that it drives them away.
