When you’re one of Britain’s biggest Fashion faces, not only do you book jobs like the covers of Vogue, travel the world and create eponymous collections – you also get to attend some pretty fabulous parties. Jourdan Dunn is one of those who has found herself on the guestlist of the world’s starriest, most extravagant parties - from the Met Ball in New York to the red carpets of Cannes.
So, when it came to designing her collection for Missguided, the online outfitter who is fast becoming the first port of call for Britain’s millennials heading to the dancefloor, it felt only natural that the collection marry together her equal flair for a natty party dress and off-duty athleisure wear. The result? Jourdan describes it as “a perfect mash up” of all that she is about right now.
Here, we sat down with the 26-year-old to discover how to throw a model-worthy party and how to be the ultimate hostess with the mostess:
1. Mix Up Your Sartorial Options
“Sometimes I do like to do the whole short sexy dress, but sometimes it’s good to keep it low key. If you’re wearing an oversized T-shirt, you can rock it with a pair of knee-high boots or silk joggers with some boots and a bra. That’s still sexy and it gives me Nineties Aaliyah vibes: it’s tomboy chic, which I love.”
2. Go With What You Want
“I like to follow that rule of legs or arms but sometimes you should break it. At the right place you can break rules and make it your own. It's about whatever makes you feel confident and amazing at the end of the day.”
3. Keep Your Make-Up Simple
“A good setting spray is amazing, Maybelline does a great one. Maybe don’t do a smoky eye because when the lights turn up and you don’t want to be that girl. Best to keep it nice and fresh.”
4. Top Model Legs Take Prep
“Sometimes, I like a good old baby oil. It keeps your skin extra nice and smooth and silky. Then I top it off with Maybelline sun glow bronzer which is perfect. I have moments where I don’t actually shave my legs. My make-up artist is like ‘Jourdan, when are you going to shave your legs?' When I can be bothered I shave them or when I go to get other stuff lasered I get them done too.”
5. An iPhone Is The Ultimate Party Accessory
“If I could only carry one thing, it would have to be my phone: Selfies, contacts, etc.”
6. The Nineties Is The Decade To Look To
“I feel like my ideal party would be back in the Nineties somewhere in LA. Straight Hip-Hop, R&B just vibing, flexing, and then Tupac rocks up, then Snoop rocks up, then the whole of Def Jam rocks up and it just shuts it down. That would be the best party for me.”
7. The Best Parties Happen When Something Surprising Happens
“The best party I’ve ever been to was Kanye West’s during Paris Fashion Week. He had Anna Wintour on the go-karts and I didn’t stop dancing to the sick DJ. It was just vibes and everybody was just having so much fun."
8. There’s No Party Like A London Party
“We have better music. You can go to a place that’s going to play strictly garage, or house, or all a mixture and it’s just a more cool, laid-back vibe.”
9. Cooking For A Crowd Is All About Ease
“I feel the pressure when I have to cook for people because then you have to deal with other people’s opinions and views. I feel like you can never go wrong with a good curry.”
10. As The Host It’s Your Job To Make It Fun
“I feel like it’s important that you make sure that everyone is good. Make sure you spend time with each group of people, so they feel like they’re there with you, and part of the party. I think it’s important to interact with your guests and make them feel welcome. I won’t be the person just by the corner waiting for people to come up to me, I’ll be going up to people, dancing with that group, then go on to that group, then make sure that person has a drink.”
