Leading GB athlete and face of new Nike React Campaign Dina Asher Smith may be young, but she's already made a name for herself in the sporting world. The 22-year-old Olympic sprinter is currently the fastest woman in Britain, holding the records for the 100 metres and 200 metres - both of which she achieved while studying for a history degree at London's King’s College University. Impressed? We don't blame you.
Dina, who stars in Nike's popular 'Nothing Beats A Londoner' advert alongside a host of other famous faces, tells GLAMOUR about the women who helped shape her career and what she does to make herself feel powerful.
Who is the woman who has inspired you and helped you the most in your career?
I think the woman who has helped me the most in my career so far would be my primary school teacher Mrs Douglas. She was the one who saw that I had a talent for running while I was in primary school and didn’t have a clue - I was just running around having fun. She was the one that made sure that I went to running club at lunch times and she entered me for the local competitions which is how I got into being an elite athlete.
When was the last time you felt proud of yourself?
To be fair I feel quite lucky that every week in training my gym coach and track coach have me trying new things, so when I achieve that I do feel proud of myself. I have those little mini achievements every week. But in a major way, it would probably be when I came fourth and got a silver medal at the World Athletic Championships in London last summer because I did that after having broken my foot 5 months earlier which was just a little bit stressful. To be able to recover rehab and then get back to a world class standard and win a medal, I was really happy with that.
What do you think is the best thing about being a woman right now?
There are so many fabulous things about being a woman right now that it's hard to pinpoint one. But if I had to choose, I'd say I'm particularly proud of the fact that we, as a sex, in conjunction with the work of a lot of men as well are moving towards being more equal in terms of our genders which is great. There's a real sense of female empowerment right now and that's something that I'm really proud of. Obviously I'm always proud to be a woman but right now the fact that we're all supporting each other makes me extra proud.
Finish the sentence: When I want to feel powerful I...
... I make sure that I'm all glammed up and wearing something I love because in my job as a sprinter I have to be as confident as possible and for me, that comes when my clothes and everything looks incredible. At the moment my favourite thing to wear are my Nike Epic React shoes - I love the colour.
