On the global stage, Donald Trump took the world by surprise when he publicly accused his predecessor, Barack Obama, of tapping the phone lines of Trump Tower in New York during the presidential election campaign. Making the allegations on his Twitter account, Trump wrote: "Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!," before following up with a series of similarly worded tweets. According to The New York Times, the director of the FBI, James Comey, asked the Justice Department this weekend to publicly reject Trump’s claims, and "argued that the highly charged claim is false and must be corrected". An official statement is yet to be released.
