By the time lingerie model Sarah Stage, 33, gave birth to her first child, James, in April 2015, many people couldn't believe how her six-pack remained intact and well-defined throughout her pregnancy - the product of being super fit when she got pregnant, the California-based mother has said.
Although she's best known for her viral pregnancy photos on Instagram, Sarah continued to attract attention after giving birth, when she said she lost almost all of the 28 pounds she'd gained during pregnancy in just two weeks. Her baby bump was no longer visible four days postpartum.
The mom recently announced that she's five months pregnant with her second child and is due in October.
"We'd been trying to conceive for several months," Sarah says. "I couldn't imagine not sharing the news of my pregnancy with my followers."
Although she suffered from morning sickness until her 19th week of pregnancy, she's finally feeling better: "I'm finally able to fully enjoy this pregnancy!" she says.
Still, as was the case during her first pregnancy, Sarah says she's receiving flak for the size of her bump: "I could eat a taco and look more pregnant than that!" one person commented on her Instagram birth announcement. Wrote another, "Is the child underdeveloped or a damn jelly bean, cause her stomach makes no sense?"
But Sarah isn't letting the seldom hater get her down or fuel anxieties about her baby's health. "The majority [of comments] are very supportive and positive, so I focus on that," she says. "The entire [first] pregnancy, I felt reassured from the feedback from my doctor, which was always that the baby was measuring normal and healthy. The same goes for this pregnancy."
After her first pregnancy, Sarah told Cosmopolitan.com that she wasn't fazed by her subtle baby belly. "I didn't think anything of the way I looked, I just thought, 'This is me.' I think women are beautiful, and we're all different shapes and sizes. Some women don't show a lot when they're pregnant, and my mom carried this way when she was pregnant. She didn't show until around six months, so I didn't think anything of it," she said.
FWIW, her son James weighed nearly 9 pounds at birth - a healthy size, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which defines "low birth weight" as less than about 5.5 pounds.
At 22 weeks pregnant, Sarah appears to be unbothered by the response to her pregnancy announcement.
She credits her own ebook for her current state of fitness, as she's been consistently following her own at-home workouts - using lighter weights than usual. "Having a toddler makes it tricky to have the time [to work out]," says the model, who tries to exercise when her son naps.
"I'm just trying to be in the moment during this pregnancy - it flies by so quickly, and I want to make sure I'm enjoying every second of it."
