It’s no surprise that Jaden Smith is shining at the Met Gala, a night when experimental fashion is encouraged. At only 18, Smith is somehow lightyears ahead when it comes to fashion. (Remember when he wore a skirt for a Louis Vuitton campaign?) And tonight, he’s surprising red carpet watchers yet again — by carrying, as an accessory, what seems to be a bundle of his own dreadlocks.
The lightly bleached dreads in his hand do indeed match the stubble on his head, so Smith appears to have spent the past year cultivating this gem for tonight. Needless to say, Twitter is already exploding at the thought of one of its favorite young stars headed out with his own hair as the pièce de résistance atop his already chic outfit. “You think you’re cool but you’re not Jaden Smith cut off your dreads and use them as an accessory cool,” a fan tweeted. New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman has already awarded Smith the “avant-garde prize of the night.”
Smith’s dreads have been a longtime element of his look, but as any Insta-cool teen knows, part of high fashion means being unafraid to mix things up. It took a little help from dad Will Smith, who, Vogue reports, cut his son’s dreads off earlier this month. (Yes, Jaden is so cool his haircut warranted a Vogue article.) At the time, reports assumed the cut was due to Jaden’s role in the upcoming film Life in a Year. Whatever the reason for the cut, one thing is clear: Those dreads were hanging out somewhere in the Smith household for two weeks before their big night on the red carpet tonight.
In case bringing his dreads as a pseudo-clutch isn’t chic enough for you, Jaden also continued his commitment to gender-neutral dressing with heeled boots. Can someone please make this teen a fashion editor already?
